The Price Of Candy

On Feb. 26, 2012, Trayvon Martin’s life was cut short when he was shot as he walked to a family member’s home from a convenience store where he had purchased some candy. The price of candy for this seventeen-year-old child was his life.

Stand Your Ground

Florida, along with twenty other states, has a “Stand Your Ground” law. This law allowed George Zimmerman to fatally shoot Trayvon simply because he claimed he feared for his life when he saw the candy-toting, hoody-wearing child. Now Trayvon’s family is left to pick up the pieces, but it’s not that easy. It’s time for us all to stand our ground and not allow anyone to hide behind laws like these. It’s time for George Zimmerman to answer to the justice system.

Authors4Trayvon

We come together as a community of readers and authors to support Trayvon’s family in their battle to ensure justice is served in this sad case. April 1-7, 2012, participating authors will donate 17% of their book sells (eBook and print) to the Martin family.

Jamie Fleming-Dixon; Author of "How to Change Your Mindset + Live Your Most Fabulous Life"

Larie: Jamie, girl, your e-book is awesome! It’s straight to the point and very concrete. I can tell that you are versed in not just changing, but also shaping your mindset and I want to thank you for believing in yourself and putting forth this work to share. I also thank you for e-chatting with me for this interview. Now, let’s get started!  Your title is just what it is; How to Change Your Mindset + Live Your Most Fabulous Life. Did you “play” around with other titles at first?

Jamie: I kind of played around with the title a little, but I knew I wanted it to have something to do with living your most fabulous life since that is the tag line and motto of For Colored Gurls. After I figured that part out, I then started thinking, 'How does a person start living their most fabulous life?' By learning how to cultivate a more positive mindset and outlook on life. If you're mindset isn't right, there's no way your life will be fabulous. So, that's how the title was born!

Larie: I appreciate how you said fabulous doesn’t to be what most of us automatically think; the glamour and glitz of Hollywood, but whatever we want it to be, how did you realize this & how did you feel when it first manifested in your life?

Jamie: I realized this when I read Kimora Lee Simmons' book “Fabulosity: What It Is & How to Get It.” In it, she covers every aspect of a woman's life: career, family, success, relationships, etc. That made me realize that fabulousness doesn't necessarily equate to Beyoncé on the red carpet; it can also be Susan who is an awesome mom and gives her absolute best to her family. I felt amazing when I really understood that I could decide what a fabulous life meant for me because that means I am free to live life on my terms and not anyone else's.

Larie: You wrote about one discovering new aspects of self because we are always changing. Share with us one new self-discovery since you’ve changed your mindset plus been living your most fabulous life.

Jamie: One new thing I've discovered about myself is that I really can do anything I put my mind to. I mean, we've heard that saying since we were little, but the saying goes to a whole other level when you actually realize and understand it for yourself. I'm actually amazed by the things I've accomplished since I've come to this awesome realization.

Larie: Are you ever surprised when you discover a new aspect of yourself and/or at how fabulous you are?

Jamie: I think I am surprised sometimes. It's like I logically know that I can do anything and be anything, but sometimes, those little moments of doubt creep in, and I start to become unsure and a little anxious. And then, when it actually happens (whatever “it” is), I'm just like “Wow! I can't believe I actually did that!”

Larie: “Doors of opportunity and abundance open to me now!” This affirmation comes from chapter 2, “Getting Rid of Limiting Beliefs,” do you remember the first door of opportunity and abundance that you walked through? Please share that experience with us.

Jamie: It happened right after I graduated from college. Like I share in the book, I couldn't find a job in my career field. My goal, at the time, was to eventually begin working as a staff writer at the magazine I'd been interning at. But, that didn't happen. I went to the library one day and stumbled upon a freelance writing book, and that's when I had the idea to actually create my own career instead of waiting on a job to open up somewhere. I would say that deciding to start a business and put my career in my own hands is when the doors of opportunity and abundance opened for me. Now, I'm not saying that everything has been perfect because it definitely hasn't been. But I've never gone without anything I needed, and the opportunities continue to flow in.

Larie: My most favorite thing from How to Change Your Mindset + Live Your Most Fabulous Life is, “…He, (God), didn’t place my desires in me with no way to make them happen.” ~Jamie Fleming-Dixon. WHOA! How did you come to this insightful awareness?

Jamie: I receive Joel Osteen's emails every morning, and I remember one where he was talking about our dreams. And basically, he was saying that God wouldn't give us the desires and dreams we have for no reason; He wants to fulfill them; otherwise, we wouldn't have them. That absolutely blew me away because I had never thought of it that way before. But, when I started thinking about it, it made so much sense to me. I believe that God wants us to do great things, and He wants us to live our dreams and passions. And while it may take some time to get where we want to be, He will help us get there because He desires to see us prosper.

Larie: What do we have to look forward to as you continue to empower women to live their most fabulous lives?

Jamie: How to Change Your Mindset + Live Your Most Fabulous Life will be available in paperback in March of this year. Also, I have another book coming out this summer: The Black Girl's Guide to Life as a 20-something. I have other e-books and books in the works as well. And, of course, you can look forward to more inspiring and empowering posts on FCG.

Larie: Now, at the end of your interviews on your radio show, Flyy, Female, & Fabulous, you ask your guests to share what makes them fabulous, so Jamie, “What makes you fabulous?” ;)

Jamie: Wow, I never thought I'd have to answer this question myself! Well, what makes me fabulous is I am determined, and I am a go-getter. Whenever I have a goal, no matter how big or scary it may seem, I pursue it. I might be a little afraid, but I go after it anyway!

Larie: Never thought you’d have to answer that one ‘eh? Funny! :lol:Jamie, please provide any additional information you’d like readers to have, (website, email, events, and especially how to purchase your book). Thanks again love!

Jamie: Website: For Colored Gurls; Events: Flyy, Female & Fabulous Radio is every Thursday at 6:30 PM ET (unless otherwise noted).
